Invisible Mages and Vanishing Rogues - have you seen many lately?

I was talking to Sev and Kyxyn in officer, and Kyxyn was talking about what we want to do in WoD and we were talking about mythic and I said that I was not interested in recruiting specifically for that, as we may or may not get to Mythic (even though we are doing some now, that doesn't mean we will be come WoD).  Kyxyn said we had no rogues or mages - and he even made the comment that there is nothing that a mage can bring to a raid that we don't already have.  Harsh, but really, we haven't raided with a mage since Throne of Thunder and I haven't really missed them, and we haven't had a rogue since Roshii stopped playing.  Aimei/Lushnek said that for mythic we would need to bring all classes.

So I had a think about it, and I feel there really has been a decline in rogues and mages in PvE.  However, there is no shortage of them in PvP - rogues and mages are abundant (well, considering I play with Frost mage Shab, it's not surprising).  But if you have a look at these statistics from World of Wargraphs, you can see that all the mages are hiding over there.

Arms warriors. What a surprise. They have had a good season - I've found warriors extremely difficult for our team comp to get down.  Interestingly rogues don't feature that highly - they're at #10.  Compare these graphs to the PvE ones - what a contrast!

Not suprising really.  Disc priests are the reigning queens of healing in PvE though it is interesting to see that my class is up there too, ahead of holy paladins. Position 10 must be a special rogue number, since Combat rogues occupy the 10th spot again.

Taking a walk down memory lane, it feels like Cataclysm was where I saw lots of mages and rogues. Mages were abundant during Firelands when Tarecgosa's Rest had every caster all atizz.  Then of course in Dragon soul there were rogues all over the place getting their legendary daggers.

I won't deny that Pandaria has felt like a warlock dominated expansion.  I remember Cynwise writing about how there were so few warlocks back in Cataclysm, it's like Blizz tried to entice them back by making them amazing.  And it worked.  I see more warlocks than I can poke a stick at!

It makes me wonder which class is going to be the next "it" class in WoD?

  1. That is really interesting to think about - I know my mage Ceniza is hanging out drinking with pirates in Booty Bay, and the rogue hasn't been seen in years...lol!

  2. Interesting! Funny enough, we have both a mage and a rogue on our team (this is where they've been hiding)! And ah, Disc. I've always loved the class - but we usually get nerf to the ground at the beginning of each expac, it seems. Makes me worry about WoD (though I always have Holy to fall back on). Sometimes, I wish my main was my Resto Druid as it feels more stable. I don't believe they've ever been really bad? Oh well, I like to think that as long as you put in efforts and do your very best, it shows! There's usually a way to still shine (or I'm just very optimistic).

I would like to see all healing classes balanced out somehow in WoD!

    1. Oh druids had their bad time! We are quite strong at the moment but early Pandaria we were pretty pathetic!

    2. In a way, it makes you appreciate your class more. It also made me much more creative with my spells. I was all about testing out thing at the beginning of Pandaria. I still can't wait to see what WoD has in store for healers!

  3. I remember that Cynwise post, boy how times have changed. I've noticed people trash talking about destro in trade so you know their time as arrived, lol.

    1. You look at these things and wonder if anyone remembers those days when there were no warlocks :D Not that I ever noticed it - we have always had at least 2 warlocks raiding, since BC!

  4. Having played a Rogue throughout Mists, I can tell you that they lag the rest of the field in DPS by a decent margin. They can get that good initial burst, but once that goes away, they run out of steam really fast. The only advantage they have is stealth in PvP, but that's just so they don't get slaughtered indiscriminately. I can't tell you the number of times I've felt one stun or cc short of being able to finish someone off and having to break off an attack and vanish to recuperate.

Rogues also suffer from the perception that they're a PvP class. And really, Blizz hasn't done much to change that perception and make Rogues useful for raids.

    1. Perhaps Rogues will get some loving come WoD - personally I find melee difficult so I can't play rogue... but perhaps with this new levelling an alt business I might like having an alt and I'll give it a try... and then see why everyone hates it...

  5. As a warlock, I would just like to say, IT IS ABOUT TIME!

Warlocks are awesome and so very full of win!

    1. I think of Warlocks like druids - all the ones I know are long stayers and love their class :D There are a lot of long time druid players out there!

    2. Funny thing is I used to be a druid. I raided most of Wrath as a druid healer. I miss the days of blanket rejuv and when Nourish was the best spell ever. Now I can't play my druid at all. Makes me kind of sad.
